"When A Time to Kill was published twenty years ago, I soon learned the painful lesson that selling books was far more difficult than writing them. I bought a thousand copies and had trouble giving them away. I hauled them in the trunk of my car and peddled them at libraries, garden clubs, grocery stores, coffee shops and a handful of bookstores." - John Grisham
My wife reminded me of this quote from Grisham's Ford County Stories last evening, telling me that I'm doing exactly the same thing. Fact is, she's right. Times have changed so rather than lugging books in my car, I'm pimping them over the internet. With print on demand and eBooks, I didn't have to buy thousands of copies to try and sell to potential customers. Technological advances have changed the selling process versus twenty years ago. However, the bottom line is, seven days a week, ten hours a day, I'm trying to convince people to part with the cost of a tall latte in exchange for one of my novels and it's a slow road to success. But if I sit back and think about it, look where John Grisham is now.
